poached apples

Note takers! Looking for a dessert to make in your rice cooker?

Look no further. Yesterday, I decided to try my hand at something new. Poached apples. They were so good that I have already eaten all of them. They are super simple to make too.

You need the following ingredients:

  • 4 apples, peeled and halved
  • 4 cups of water
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • Vanilla Extract (1/2 tbsp + a bit extra)

Here’s what to do:

Step 1: Prepare your apples. Remove the core, peel them, and half them. Then, I brushed a bit of vanilla extract (the bit extra) on each of the apple halves.

Side note: If there is anyone who knows of a device of effectively remove the core from and peel apples, let me know. I am so bad at removing the core, and the act of peeling is just so laborious to me.

Step 2: Pour the 4 cups of water and the 1/2 tablespoon of vanilla extract into the cooking bowl of the rice cooker, and let it get to a boil. For me, I used the steam option to get it to boil.

Step 3: Once the water is boiling, add the 4 cups of sugar, and stir until it is all dissolved. This should not take too long. No longer than a minute or 2.

Step 4: Add the apples, and let them cook in the rice cooker for 20 minutes. Because they were floating, I turned them over halfway through so that they would be evenly cooked (or poached).

Step 5: Remove from the rice cooker and enjoy. I don’t have ice cream in the house, but I can image how great that these would go with ice cream. They were so flavorful. You could taste the vanilla, but it paired well with the apple flavor. It was super great. I counteracted any healthiness of the poached apples by eating it with a slice of cheesecake.

The Final Product

These can be refrigerated and reheated in the microwave for 30-40 seconds, but they taste so much better after you take them right out of the rice cooker. Definitely a recipe that you should add to your arsenal.
